Just one more day to camp!

The 365 Youth Camp 08 blog thus 'expires', after months of posts and writing but the journey starting this Sunday could very well last a lifetime for every one of us. Throughout these months, different committee members have written about their hopes and dreams, their fond memories of the past youth camps, their significant encounters with God. We have all realized there is much to 'take home' from any youth camp, and this Sunday presents another opportunity for a great encounter with God.

This blog has really been the sum of different accounts of people who have had colourful experiences in camps. Your life, like this blog, will be the sum of all the experiences you have gone through in life, displayed for all to see, read, enjoy and learn from. For many of you, this coming camp may bring a 'new post' and a new page, if only we would allow God to write it.

As we pack for these 4 days and 3 nights, let's go remembering 'God is able'. Let's go with expectant hearts and open hands. Let's go ready.

Camp Briefing Points

Dear all,

We are only a few days away. This is for those of you who didn't attend our Briefing on Saturday.

365 Youth Camp 2008 Briefing

In order to maximize your enjoyment during the camp, you are required to obey certain camp guidelines.

1.0 Common ethics

1.1 Behavior

Maintain appropriate conduct throughout the duration of camp (e.g. no fighting, bullying, sleeping in during sessions, littering)
Turn off your hand phones during the sessions to reduce distractions. Maintain decorum when the Speaker is preaching and during the altar calls.

1.2 Attendance

Be punctual for all events (sessions, games, quiet time, dorm moments). All campers are not allowed to leave the premises of the campsite without permission from the Commandant and are expected to attend ALL sessions.
Light-outs rule at 11 p.m. (and on Tuesday night, 12 p.m.) to be obeyed without any questions.

1.3 Participation

All campers are to take part in the workshops, games and other activities (Banquet Night, Talent Time, Photo Session).

1.4 Prohibited Items

Weapons, drugs, alcohol, cards, lighters, cigarettes, inappropriate magazines, books, unnecessary valuables (jewelry, laptops, PSP). These will be confiscated if found.

2.0 Items to bring/Attire

2.1 For Sessions

Bible, notebook, stationery
Long pants, warm clothing, jackets (hall may be cold)
No shorts, miniskirts, inappropriate clothing.

2.1 For Games

Sports attire
Good shoes and dark colored T-Shirts

2.2 For Banquet Night

Your date (!)
Clothing according to the theme (retro)

2.3 For the entire stay

Toiletries (tooth brush, toothpaste, cleanser, soap, shampoo) and towels
Regular changes of underclothes and socks
Water bottle
Some money
Any special, personal medication if required

The buses will leave FGT at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, 7^th Dec. Campers may bring their bags into the church hall and leave them at the back. For admin purposes, be at church at 1 p.m. SHARP. Buses are expected to arrive in church around 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 10^th Dec.

Camp Briefing and Banquet Night theme

Dear 365 campers (and potential campers, we look forward to having you sign up this weekend),

This Saturday is very important as we will be having our camp briefing after the 365. All who are attending the camp are strongly encouraged to come, to have an idea of what is expected during the camp.

To give you all a heads-up with regards to the theme of our Banquet Night (a dinner event on Monday night) this year... our theme is "Blast from the Past". You can all come dressed in the 60's/70's/80's style (any one of them), as long as you don't look modern :P

We are looking forward to camp, continue to pray as it draws nearer.

1) When was the first youth camp that you went to, and when was the last (year)?
My first camp was in 1981 and the last was ...aiyoh...such a long time ago...cant exactly remember, but I knew it was in STM seremban

2) From all the years that you went to youth camp, what can you remember most clearly that has probably changed your life?

Well, my first camp was the most memorable one.....I still remember that I was in Form 4 and after rededicating my life to Christ in school after my SRP, the next step was to make a stand home. My parents are staunch Taoist believers and being the only son, they would never approve of my decision of accepting Christ. I had planned to break the news to them on the eve of CNY in 1982 as that was the highlight of ancestral worship in my home. As such, during the 1981 camp, the whole camp, especially my dorm was praying for me throughout the camp. The encouragement I got from everyone in camp gave me the confidence to go through with the whole thing. This carried on even after camp and when I finally made a stand at home, I had the comfort of knowing that everyone was there for me and was praying for me. Thats brotherly love man....

3) Any funny/interesting moments? (Any particular incident)
Yup, every camp has its funny moments....I still remembered my first banquet night...1981 camp...being a rookie who has never been to camp, I did not know that we had to dress up.....long sleeve shirt, ties, nice leather shoes and everything else...so I turned up with a pair of pants (not a proper one), short sleeve shirt (quite a flimsy one) and jogging shoes!!....plus a borrowed tie which did not match....and guess who was my date...Pas. Yoke Poh!!..habis!!!...anyway, it went alright....she forgave me....being young, you only think about the food....well...

I also remembered my first fasting camp...yes, we had one and if I am not mistaken, it was in 1985....I came home losing so much weight that my mother could hardly recognize me...anyway, it was a great camp as everyone learnt to get up early to pray (nearly everyday at 530am) and we fasted from all meals for about 4 days...you guys should try it....helps to cut down on camp fees!! ha ha!!!

I also remembered we tied someone up at a tree after games one day as an initiation rite....fun man....he was never the same again....

4) What were the conditions of the campsites that you went to, and how were the physical environments like?
Most of the camps we had those days were in a place called Lakeview Ringlet, Cameron Highland....it was old but comfortable and cold....but not every chalet was like that. I remembered one year, we had one chalet, 2 storey, which we called "the black hole of calcutta" ...not only was it old and very dark at night but everything there does not work. I remember, we had to move everyone from the top chalet to the lower chalet as the top bathroom leaked so badly that whenever someone bathed, soap water would come down like rain. Thank goodness it was just soap water that flowed down and not the sewerage!! ha ha!!!...Generally, the camp site was nice as it had a rustic feel to it. The is a lake which was about 1km away which we usually went for picnics....cant say the same now as my last visit there, it was no longer nice but very muddy. The camp site also had a great place for games but the hall was small...anyway, close fellowship good mah...

The air in Cameron Highlands was fantastic then .....not as good now lah.

The worst one for me was ACS Malacca....we had one camp there and it we lived in this school for a week....the toilets...were not great lah and not only was it hot, we had to light up about 5-6 mosquito coils every night to keep the mossies away. However, we enjoyed the school field as it was big and we could have so many games and activities there.

Then there's STM. STM (Seminari Theoloji Malaysia) was more dormitory style and it was the only camp which saw a separation between the youth and yound adults. STM had a nice hall and cafeteria. Quite an enjoyable place actually....but compared to Cameron Highlands, we missed the cold weather and greenery....

Hey, wherever the camp site is and no matter what the conditions are, God always shows up...

5) What would be the highlight of a youth camp, as you knew it back then?
Well, I would say games plus the morning and night sessions. We usually had telematches plus captain ball and tene coil (quite similar to captain ball). Games were a serious matter then but everyone kept their cool.....relax, relax....even the pastors played....tension eh.....but in games, no friend friend lah, everyone went all out to win....pastor also no give chance man!!!!

Camp was important for many as most of us came wanting to hear from God. As much as it was fun, it was also a serious time for many. Many spent much time alone as well or prayed in groups seeking God for either one thing or another. The hunger for the Word made the morning and night meetings very important to many. We also prayed alot in camp. I guess it's the hallmark of our church ...never leave home forgetting it......

6) Why would you encourage the youth today to come to camp?

I developed great friendships in camp. My good buddy, Mun Leong (you can see him on my Facebook) and me have been friends for such a long time and camp was a place where we really got close. He has been a source of strenghth and encouragement to me and its a great joy for us to see each other grow and mature in the Lord through these years. Godly friends help push you to greater heights in God. Camp is a right place to develop friendships like that

Camp is also a good place to better yourself. Its a place to learn from others, esp. your leaders and pastors as you mature in your christian life. Other than your normal friends, learn to develop good relationships with your leaders and pastors as well....no where better than camp since you will be there for a great number of days. There's also the areas in your life which needs polishing, eg. habits, etc. If your stay long enough with your friends in camp year after year (since camp was a whole week then), you notice things and perhaps learn things about yourself which you never noticed....trust me, it shows...good friends help to correct one another...

Anyway, why not camp? Why not set aside time to meet God, learn His word, develop godly friendships plus have fun all the way? If you think this is boring, then you need help....serious help....

7) What makes a good camp?
Good planning ...of course with more fun programs lah....much prayer......encourage yourself by setting some goals for camp thus personal preparation of going to meet God makes going to camp more exciting....

This song makes me remember how God touched me during camp. Each time I hear or sing this song, I will definitely remember how God encouraged me when I was facing different problems during that time and how God spoke to me through this song during my very first camp. This song really strengthens my faith and it gives me the assurance that God will be with me in times of hardship and discouragement. I felt so secure being in God's presence. As a new Christian at that time, I didn't expect to gain or learn anything from camp, but as this song was sung again and again, my faith grew stronger.

An interview with the Youth Pastors, Richard & Louisa Evans

Q: Which year did you first attend camp and how many camps have you been to so far?
R: I attended my first Christian camp when I was 8 years old, back in England. My friend had invited me, and i went. But after that, I did not attend any other Camps until I attended FGT's Youth Camp in 2004. This year will be my 5th Youth Camp with FGT.

L: I first attended FGT's Youth Camp in 1989(!) and continued to attend four more Youth Camps until 1993, when I left to study in the UK. I was the (scary) Assistant Camp Commandant for the Camp in 1993.

Q: What are your fond memories about Youth Camp?
R: I felt last year's Youth Camp was really, really good. I really enjoyed all the teaching sessions, the times of ministry, the games and...going for a dip in the sea!

L: For me, Youth Camp is always a time of significant encounter with God. We were "highly spiritual" in those days (hehe) and would wake up at 5am to pray everyday during camp!

Q. What are your hopes for 365 in general in this year's Youth Camp?
(apart from that fire would come down from heaven!!!)
R: That God would 'prime' the new generation. 'Prime' is preparation. It's like when you want to paint a wall you have to 'prime' it first (strip the old paint off and put on an undercoat, or "primer" layer) before actually repainting it. Likewise, I believe there has to be some preparation done amongst us before we will see God really move. I also would like to see a much stronger sense of Community/Fellowship (Koinonia) built up among our young people.

L: I would like everyone to have an encounter with God and hear something from God personally. That God would be real to them, because many have still not had that experience. After an encounter with God, you can't stay the same. People won't give their lives to serve God without a real encounter with God. I believe that God will do something significant for 365 this year.

Q. What do you think of the theme 'Survive, Thrive, Revive'?
R: I love it! It is very appropriate! For the 365, in some sense we have "strived" and "thrived", but we need the spiritual "revival" from God to really take us further. At the end of the day, it's God who is able.

Q. What would you like to tell the campers?
L: People need to come prepared to receive something from God for their spiritual lives. They need to remind themselves that this is 4 solid days with God, and for God, to "allow" Him to do something in their spiritual lives.

R: The camp committee has worked very hard and worked very well this whole year! I particularly like the Camp Blog and I love the Captain Able "cartoons"! Personally I would also love to see many more people sign up for camp over these next couple of weeks...I believe that the camp will be great time and that it would be a great shame for anybody to miss out on what God is about to do!

Youth Camp...

I'm hoping that the youth camp this year will be a historical point in many youths' lives. As commandant, I'm hoping we (the committee) will do a decent job to make the camp conducive. I'm thankful for the team working together and looking forward to a great end to the year.

Youth Camp...

...is something you just have to experience it yourself at least once, and you will look forward for the next one! it is not so much of just going there to have fun, but a few days set aside totally for God and experience the most of God together with your friends.Every camp has it's significance in within and so much more to gain such as friendship and games with nothing to lose! =)

The FGT youth camp has been ongoing for many years and it has changed in different ways, yet people remember it for the same reasons. Having been in a few youth camps and now, heading this one, I decided to ask two 'veteran' youth campers about their own personal experiences in all their past years of camp before us. The result was an insightful, interesting reply from them. The following (Part 1) is Uncle Mun Leong's response to the questions we posed them.

1) When was the first youth camp that you went to (year)?

If there is a reward for the most camps that an FGT member has attended, I must say that I would be one of the top few recipients (that would say much about my age - although I'm just a few years older than Grace Eu). My first camp was our first Fgt camp back in 1981 (I know some of you reading this were not even born yet - time flies.) During those times our favourite campsite was in Ringlet, Cameron Highlands. My last Youth Camp was in 1998 and it was held at STM Rahang, Negri Sembilan

2) From all the years that you went to youth camp, what can you remember most clearly that has probably changed your life?

Camps were like altars in my life, altars not meaning idols, but landmarks in my life that changed me. Each camp was like an altar to me, I have "stones' that I keep in remembrance of what God has done in my life. The first camp would probably be the camp that changed my life in terms of my attitude towards God and service to Him, as God challenged me to serve Him faithfully.

3) Any funny/interesting moments? (Any particular incident)

I would say one of the most interesting moments of any camp was the "Banquet Night". Banquet Night was the night when the guys dated the girls out - under the watchful eyes of the leaders! Each couple was determined by drawing lots. How anxious everyone was to find out who their dates were. When we were informed of our dates about an hour before the function, the first shouts were heard from the girls chalet! (Huh talk about boys not controlling themselves). Before we went to the girls' dorm to"date" them out we were coached by our dorm leaders on what to say and do. The aim was exposing our young people to simple etiquette and manners.

For me my highlight would be my very first camp. When we arrived at the campsite and my friends and I were told that we were going to be in the same dorm as Ps Hong Seng, Hock Huat & Yuen Woh, we thought it was going to be a "terrible" camp for us. We thought we needed to be prim and proper but I tell you that we had the most enjoyable time in the dorm as they were the ones who were the jokers, teasers and making a lot of noise in the dorm that makes the whole place fun to be. Even when the lights were out we were talking in whispers, sharing our "deepest secrets". I remember that there was one year when we had no hot water and we had to shower in icy cold water and that was an experience.

4) What were the conditions of the campsites that you went to, and how were the physical environments like?

I must say that in those days the campsite especially Ringlet in Camerons would be about 3-4 star. We stayed in a cosy 3 room chalet - 1 bath & 1 toilet. The meeting hall could easily accommodate up to 90 people. They also had a field where we had our games & telematches. One of the events that we had each year was a picnic at a nearby lake. It is a lovely spot with mountains rising up quite high, a cool, strong breeze, cottages scattered over the hillsides and trees beside the lake swaying with the breeze. The campsite is also a place where we could go for our walks and spend time with God.

5) What would be the highlight of a youth camp, as you knew it back then?

We had fun, good food, and most of all the spiritual food. One highlight for me was that during those times we had to take turns as a group to assist in preparing the meals. (not cooking lah - they have a cook). It fostered better unity among the groups as each group did its best during meal times. We had to also wash up after each meal.

The most important highlight of the camp was listening and studying the Word of God together. We had workshops that helped us to know the Word of God better. Many were challenged afresh to rededicate their lives to God. Many were touched by the presence of God and experiencing tremendous breakthrough in their lives.

6) Why would you encourage the youth today to come to camp?

To build a stronger relationship horizontally (manward) and vertically (Godward). 'Horizontally', because by staying together for the couple of days you not only discover the true colours of your fellow campers but you are able to get to know each other better and develop good friendships and 'Vertically', because through the few days in camp you are able to "concentrate" only on God and allow Him to speak into your life.

7) What makes a good camp?

A good camp planning committee, a heart that is prepared to receive and get ministered, prayer and not forgetting God who is the Lord of every camp.

Dear 365 Campers,

As of last week, as the Early-Bird Discount ended, our registration list hit 95 sign-ups! Continue to invite your friends to join us, there's still plenty of room and remember, it is a great opportunity to bond with your fellow 365 members.

This Friday, the 7th of Nov will be our first Youth Camp Prayer Meeting. It will be at 7.45 p.m. at the Tung Ling pantry. Much prayer is needed for a successful camp, and our committee would greatly appreciate the support as well...

We will also have a T-Shirt Fitting session on Saturday, after the 365 meeting for those who have ordered their T-Shirts. This will help give the ones interested in buying the T-shirts an idea of the sizes, as they try out the samples.

It's an exciting time, and we're gearing towards the big event. Let's expect great things this December :>

My point of View/ Working with the committee

It is a privilege to be a member of the camp committee this year. Obviously, one of the crucial parts of camp is the pre - camp activities where the nitty- gritty of the camp activities are put together. In other words, the excitement, entertainment, and games are decided in committee.

Like the good old sayings that says; “behind every successful man there is a woman”. But in the case of our youth camp, I should say, “behind a successful camp there is a committee and array of internal and external advisor plus God Himself.”

Let’s see if I can explain what I meant by the above statement with what I call the 3C’s of the Camp Committee.

3C’s of the Camp Committee
Commitment
Being in a committee (which needs to be driven by high creativity and intuition) requires a high level of commitment from the members. I am glad for myself and the other members that 'survived' and were 'revived' just like the theme of the camp suggested. According to James Womack …. “Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision, and gives us the "right stuff" to turn our dreams into reality.” We are thriving now, soon the best and reality shall be revealing……… so don’t miss the ‘reality’ of camp!!

Covering
Each member has one or more tasks to carry out within a stipulated time but somehow due to time constraints one might not be able to complete his or her task within the given time. In such a situation the committee assists each other as way to cover up for the task. I personally see this as one of the factors to achieve success as a committee. I love the attitude of covering for one another within the committee, it shows the level of unity and understanding in the committee.

Christ
The greatest joy of all is that we are all united in one body of Christ.
Although I have been around for 3 years, sometimes I would just feel very emotional (emo)/odd in the meeting. And this to some extent does affect my contribution. But thank God for the Love of Christ that binds us together as members. I have been tremendously blessed working with the committee for the second time. I have learnt a lot and I believe it is the same with the other members. It has been a fulfilling time working with people in whom the love of Christ lives.

Finally, I should say the committee has done a great job so far, however, since no one is perfect and learning is a continuous process I believe we would do better if we could just remain open for more knowledge in any area of our lives we may find ourselves in the future.

Games!!!

It's one of the most exciting times in camp for me. I hope you guys feel the same too.:-)

There'll be 2 major sessions of games throughout camp. On the 1st day, we'll be having telematches while on the 2nd day, we'll be having station games.

There'll be about 10 station games, ranging from simple straight-forward fun games to strategy games which will test your brain, speed, skills and teamwork.

And not to forget, there's messy games....just for you..:-)

Car breakdown?

Ah Beng and his four friends were going to camp at Port Dickson. Half way, the battery failed and they could not start the car. So Ah Beng said to his four friends: “Maybe if we push the car and engage the gear, we can start the engine”. So his four friends pushed the whole day and were very exhausted but the car did not move an inch.
Why couldn’t Ah Beng and his friends move the car?
Because two Ah Bengs were pushing from the front and two from behind.

Name of God is Harold?

Ah Beng came back from camp and was very excited about what he learned. He told Ah Lian excitedly , “I have discovered a new name for God ? Ah Lian asked , “is Jehovah or El Shaddai ,?”“No” , Ah beng replied , “What about Jehovah Rophe , or Jehovah Jireh ? “ “No , you have not heard this one before” replied Ah Beng. “Okay I give up , what is the new name of God you discovered in camp ?” asked Ah Lian. Ah Beng replied with a huge smile “Its Harold”.
Ah Lian said , “You are fooling me , where in the Bible did it say that God’s name is Harold ?”
Ah Beng replied, “But I heard the speaker prayed , “Our Father who is in heaven , Harold be Your Name.”

Luxury Bus Trip?

Ah Beng got up a luxury double-decker bus, going to camp at Port Dickson. Since the luxury bus was half full, the conductor told Ah Beng that he could sit anywhere he liked. Ah Beng got to the top deck, and he liked it very much because the view was fantastic. Then a passenger came up and demanded that Ah Beng to sit elsewhere. Ah Beng refused. The conductor came and pleaded with Ah Beng. He refused to because the conductor promised him that he could sit anywhere.
The driver came up to find out what was the problem. Then He whispered into Ah Beng’s ear. Immedaitely, Ah Beng got his bag and went to sit at the lower deck. The passenger and conductor were surprised and asked the driver what did he tell Ah Beng.
The Driver said: Oh , I just told him that the top deck is going to Penang and the lower deck is going to Port Dickson.

The Camp Theme

Survive, Thrive, Revive !!!

This is the theme for Youth Camp this December. I believe that many of us will be refreshed by the Word of God again and we will return from this camp not empty handed but with promises to claim and a God to glorify. Among the many camps that I have attended, one thing that encourages me is that the youths never fail to receive what they desired for in the camp itself. Many can give testimonies of how God has answered their prayers and how they experienced personal breakthroughs during that time.

I would like to share how i view the theme for this upcoming Youth Camp. The word "survive" means to remain functional or usable by God even in situations where it seemed to difficult. As a youth, I understand that sometimes we tend to be rebellious and we break the rules. But God wants us to listen to Him and obey what He commands us to do because He has a greater purpose than what we can see or imagine. For example, He will want us to reach out to our nonbeliever friends but we must first place ourselves in a place where we are walking right with God so that it is a good testimony to our friends. He certainly does not want us to be in a place where we invalid ourselves from being used by Him. We may just miss the opportunity because He can raise up another faithful servant who would listen to Him.

Secondly, I think that God wants us to grow in our relationship with Him. At this age of our lives, we can be easily distracted by our studies, friends and other activities and sometimes we forget that we have a God that wants us to spend time with Him too. For many of us, we know that He is always there when we need Him but we forget that He created us to have fellowship with Him. This will speak to all the youths about remembering our first love.

I like the last bit of the theme of this camp which says "revive". I know that this Youth Camp will be remembered because God will restore and renew strength in us. He will increase our strength in ways which we will know that it is only from Him. His strength will be immeasurable and His Word says that those who hope on the Lord will renew their strength. As we seek Him and ask from Him, He will certainly give to us the strength for a new year to come. This strength will be the engine that drives the youth to serve God with a greater passion and to trust in Him the things that He wants us to do.

Youth Camp this year will be an exciting time in life to experience the reality of God once again.

My Most Memorable Camp Experience

There has been no ‘best camp’ for me as it were,

But rather, there have been great encounters worth remembering and sharing -

Friendships that have been built and are blossoming as they days go by,

And you suddenly realise that the 4 days at camp have sped by in no time at all.

It was to Camp 2005 that I went with a sense of excitement and an expectation for something great,

And my expectations were far from simply experiencing the very most of a plain old day at camp.

It seems like just yesteryear that I heard what God wanted me to be for Him,

It was in line with the camp theme - Making A Difference for God.

Remembering the altar call session is so empowering,

Heads were bowed and hands were raised up high in worship,

Songs of praise were sung and everyone lingered in the presence of Him alone,

The atmosphere was awesomely spirit-filled;

And there I was, enjoying God’s presence,

Expecting something from God,

Longing to hear Him.

I was prophesied over by the pastor and he said that he saw this big fountain,

Overflowing with water, and there I was with a little cup,

Trying to draw water to nourish the people by my side who were thirsting for more of Him.

But God said He would provide me with a bigger cup,

To care for more of the people in need.

I was amazed at how God spoke to me through the pastor!

It is something I hold on to till today and yes,

God is real.

God indeed works in miraculous ways;

Many people heard what they desired to hear from God during the time they spent at the altar.

Never before had I experienced God so real,

And He brought me closer to Himself at that camp.

Oh God, thank You for the time at camp spent with You.

It has been my stepping stone to the desire to serve Him,

For He made a difference in that camp,

In me and also, I believe, in the other campers as well.

So yes! Youth Camp is once again approaching!

As we look forward to it together,

Let's believe that God will indeed make a difference once again, in you and in me.

1. Ah Beng's first Day at Camp (2007)

Ah Beng was very excited to go to camp. He got his friend Muthu to help him pack his bags and while packing, he said to Muthu;

Ah Beng: Hey Muthu! The camp is at Port Dickson, right?

Muthu: Yes, Golden Sands in Port Dickson

Ah Beng: Good, could you help me pack this big pot in my bag?

Muthu: Why are you taking the pot with you?

Ah Beng: (shouted) Aaaiya!!!! to collect all the golden sand maaaaaa!!!!.. You see I am smarter than you.

2. Response to Long teaching on Camp

Ah Beng was in the camp workshop hall on the second day of camp when the workshop leader taught for long.

Later, at the door, shaking hands with guys as they moved out, Ah Beng spoke to the workshop leader and said, “your session was simply wonderful –it was very refreshing”.

The workshop leader was of course very happy and said, “Ah Beng that is very kind of you. Which of my sessions was refreshing?"

Ah Beng replied, “Oh…. When I woke up …. I was really refreshed.”

3. Can you pay the bill?

Ah Beng was brought to the hospital, and taken quickly in for emergency surgery. The operation went well, and as the groggy man regained consciousness, he was reassured by a Sister of Mercy, who was waiting by his bed.

"Ah Beng, you're going to be just fine," said the nun, gently patting his hand. "We do need to know, however, how you intend to pay for your stay here. Are you covered by insurance?"

"No, I'm not," Ah Beng whispered hoarsely.

"Can you pay in cash?" persisted the nun.

"I'm afraid I cannot, Sister."

"Well, do you have any close relatives?" the nun essayed.

"Just my sister in Taiping," he volunteered. "But she's a spinster nun."

"Oh, I must correct you, Ah Beng. Nuns are not 'spinsters;' they are married to God."

"Really...wonderful," said Ah Beng. "In that case, you can send the bill to my brother-in-law!

Our Camp Speaker!

We are very privileged to have Pastor Terry Appel as the speaker for our Youth Camp this year. Ps Terry has been a good friend of FGT since the early days and has touched many lives throughout the years.

Ps Terry is the Senior Pastor of Christian Life Centre in Mona Vale, Sydney and is married to Faye. Together, they have three children.

Ps Terry is known for the prophetic anointing on his life. Every time he speaks to us, he brings God's word to us as a church and has always given a 'prophetic word' from God to different individuals.

I believe it's not a coincidence that Ps Terry is our camp speaker for this year. I'm excited even to think about what God will do amongst us individuals and the 365 Student Ministry in camp.

Come for camp with an expectation that God will do something really great in your lives! God has something B-I-G in store for all of you!

One of the greatest parts of Youth Camp is the time spent talking to your roommates at night about the happenings of the day. It’s chatting about the yucky-ness of the games, the awesome presence of God during one of the meetings, not having enough to eat because you ended up sitting beside someone who just loves food, laughing about something so spontaneous and hilarious you’d start giggling again just at the thought of it, or simply asking what each other’s favourite colours are.

Even when it’s lights out, we normally either have too much to say to go to sleep or we’re too exhausted to say anything. And when you see movement of light or hear footsteps outside you immediately quieten down, only to burst out in fits of laughter once the footsteps fade or and the light disappears. The next day, you wake up, energized and refreshed. Really, I think God gives us extra doses of energy during Camp so that we can tune into the 11 o’clock News.

It's one of my fondest memories of camp, the chitchatting at night. :)

All the Youth Camps I've attended have always been at the same place. I think Golden Sands and I have this bond. ;) It's at this place that I've had one of the best times at the beach. Some friends and I held hands and faced the waves, letting them carry us back to the countless grains of sand. Then we'd quickly try to run back into the ocean, but as you most probably know it's pretty difficult to run in water. The simplicity yet depth of just laughing into the wind and the feel of hair blowing across gleeful faces was so amazing I've stored it into the 'Experiences I will Never Forget' file in my brain. Shouting yells of surprise at the rush of a rough wave that lifted the soles of our feet off the firmness of the sandy bottom and gave us into the hands of the sea was one of the highs in my life, just living along with God's creating and appreciating the great awesomeness of the little things in life.

On a more serious note, at times I do wish the clock would speed up and I’d be packing and heading off to camp. It’s a hiatus, a pause in my film of life. It’s a time where I don’t have to worry about exams or expectations, deadlines or the drama in life. It’s a place where I can set aside all that cause creases on my forehead and focus on God, having fun and making friends. It’s a period of rest yet one with a full schedule.

Anyway, Camp’s drawing nearer with each passing day, and although there isn’t much talk of it yet, nor are there the announcements or the booth for sign-ups, I hope you won’t think of it as just something that’s happening in December. Before you know it, you’ll be filling up registration forms or chasing your parents for money and the buzz and excitement of Camp will be filling the air. Do keep Youth Camp ’08 in your prayers that you’d like to see something great, for our God will never disappoint. =)

Ever wanted to design a t-shirt but never had the chance?
Always looked at a t-shirt thinking that you can design a better one?
Here is your chance to design one and stand a chance to win a free ticket to camp worth RM160.

The rules and regulations.
The closing date is 20th September 2008, 6pm.

The winning design will be announced during the 365 meeting on 27th September 2008.

The decision of the judges is final.

The camp committee reserves the right to edit or alter the winning design if necessary.

Each design will be competing against the designated 365 committee's design.

If to the judges there is no design better than that designed by the 365 committee, there will be no winner.

The design must be submitted on either a.) a single sheet of A4 paper (Hand-Drawn) or b.) as a Photoshop file (using A4 layout).

Design the shirt according to the camp theme "God is able". The verse is Ephesians 3:20.

When i think about Youth Camp, my thoughts does wander at times to my younger days when i was still in my early teens.

Some of the things i did as a young teen that never fails to bring a smile whenever i think about it, which you may be able to identify with:
1. Pack my bag 2-3 days ahead.
2. Bring double the clothes i need.
3. Going through the "Items to bring" checklist umpteen times to check whether i had missed anything (but sometimes boys being boys,we still end up forgetting something in the end)
4. Staying awake the whole night before camp/ waking up very early on the 1st day of camp.
5. Heart pounding hard till i see the first sign of the bus. I loved the bus rides.
6. Once reaching the campsite, rushing to the dorms to choose my bed.
7. Wishing that time flew faster till camp starts and then go slower during camp.
8. Having 'late night' chats.
9. Being second or third in the games wasnt an option.
10. During the worship session, you're as active as you have never been.

I've been attending 365's Youth Camp for the past 2 years. And although i dont do certain things that i used to do when i was younger ( eg. nowadays, i pack my bag one hour before leaving and i dont stay awake the whole night anymore :-P) BUT i still look forward for Youth Camp every year.
Why? Because.....
1. I always leave Youth Camp knowing that it was one of the best times i had during the year.
2. I always leave Youth Camp knowing someone better. And that the friends i 'found' during camp became lasting ones.

158 days to go. Excited? I am.

Why I go for camp

Youth camp is held each year, around late November or early December. Note the phrase “each year”. Many people do ask me why I go for camp every single year, even if it means missing out on things like family excursions to Penang (oh, the food!) or something like that. Even if it means forking out about a hundred ringgit. Even if it means skipping pre-prom shopping trips. Even if it means that I have to stand up to people and firmly say that this is something that I want to do.

Let me tell you why.

Someone once said this to me; “Going for camp ignites the fire for God, but when you come back, after a few weeks or so, it fizzles out, so I don’t see much point of going.”

While this may be partly (or very) true, I really do believe that camp is a time that we put aside for God. To inject a boost and a zest in our walks in Him, to renew this relationship, and maybe even to begin it. It’s like hitting the ‘refresh’ button on your browser. Camp is a few days that we specifically set aside to have ‘quality time’ with our Father in Heaven, away from the ‘real world’. Believe that this is a time that God can directly minister to us individually, and that He has something for each person who comes with expectance, genuinely seeking Him. Away from our other responsibilities, away from distractions, we can soak in His impartations, and even let it rest in our hearts so we’re ready to return to and tackle the ‘real world’.

Ah, then there’s fellowship. I mean, what other time do you have the opportunity to hang out with your church buddies for so many days at a time? When else can you meet super and amazing new people? The awesome experience of dwelling in God’s presence, exhilarating (though sometimes lame and hilarious) games, concentrating on learning His Word, and sometimes even breakthroughs, when shared with friends, can bring friendships to a deeper and more meaningful level.

We’re always encouraged to invite our non-Christian friends for camp. Personally, I invite my friends who don’t attend church so they can experience for themselves this vital part of my life. So I can show them that youth camp, or my faith in general, is not about long and boring irrelevant lectures, stringent rules, pious facades, and what not. This also includes creating an opportunity for them to meet those Christian friends of mine that I mention so often.

All in all, I’m all for going for camp. (No, I’m not saying this just because I’m part of the camp committee!) And I’ve been to more than enough camps to know for sure that indeed, God does work through and in them.

It's exactly 6 months to Youth Camp '08 :) and this is a short (or not so short) personal reflection on my hopes for this year's camp.

What do you expect when you go to Camp?
When everyone starts talking about it and everywhere you turn there always seems to be someone wearing a camp t-shirt, or in the midst of last-minute packing and ticking off on the checklist, do you wonder what will happen in those anticipated days? Do you make a mental list of what you'd like to see happen?

I do.
Just as I have my hopes for Youth Camp '08.

I hope in the birth of something extraordinary.
No one should go to Camp and expect nothing to happen, for God loves to make things happen. I want to experience something great, something that leaves me standing speechless in amazement at the awesomeness of my God. I hope that for you too.

I hope great friendships will be made.
With every Camp I attend, I make more friends. My circle becomes wider, and I once again realise that there are other people outside my own little world. This year, I hope for nothing different. I hope I'll form new friendships and strengthen old ones, and that I'll see that there are other people that need encouragement, a hug or even just a smile.

I hope that I will learn more of myself.
At the end of Camp, when the bus rumbles down the road, bringing me back home to once again settle into the daily routine of life, I hope that I'd have learnt something about myself: the admittance of my need and dependence on a living God, an area I can improve on, a friendship with fraying threads in need of repair, or the simple knowledge about something I was unable to see before. I want to come back a better person.

Of course, there are the little snippets that make Camp fun. The games, talent time, the free time for us to laze on the bed and laugh about something that happened that day, the conversations where we learn a little bit about others.

It's these things that make Camp memorable, that make it 4 days and 3 nights of meeting God, others, and ourselves. I hope you'll expect something great from this year's Youth Camp, and that you'll attempt something great upon your return.

We have heard of tons of 'talks' about how camps will boost one's self-esteem, confidence, and so forth. Little has been heard of what it does to our social lives; it builds friendships. Funny how we uncannily find ourselves understanding certain individuals more, or attached to others more after the camp. We find a great deal of jokes funny - those that will not seem hilarious when explained to others not from the camp. All these precede the boosting of one's self-esteem and confidence. This is why camps do a great deal in building friendships in our lives.

Typically, on the second night of the youth camp, the toilets and dorms are especially busy and bustling with activity. The campers excitedly dress themselves up and rehearse their lines- all in anticipation of the big event to come: Talent Time.

During this part of the camp, campers come up with their own sketches and compete against each other by showcasing their acting abilities and teamwork. The result is a camp hall that erupts with laughter and cheers from the start to finish. Despite of what it sounds like, this is not a very interesting baking class. So where else then, do you find such a combination? Well, here are a few hints. Eggs are good for their slimy property, making things sticky and icky. Flour gets very lumpy and clings to your clothes as if it were for dear life. Oyster sauce is takes a particularly smooth ride over your skin, sending chills and shivers down one’s spine.

So evidently this is a post about Camp’s infamous station games.

Usually on the 2^nd and 3^rd days of camp, games, like probably many people, stop being so ‘soft’, ‘demure’ and ‘shy’. Like campers who come out of their shell and let their more playful and wilder sides come out. Games evolve into something more brutal, and indefinitely, way more messy.

Personally, I don’t mind having a piece of toast, butter very generously spread all over, to be set on top of my head. In the spirit of games, I don’t even mind being drenched in some ‘flour + water’ solution, for as long as I’m not wearing something that I’d like to bring home.
